OREF stands for Onrus River Estuary Forum

We are a Public Benefit Organization (PBO)

Our Mission

To ensure that the Onrus Estuary remains pristine for future generations.

About Us

  • OREF represents diverse local interest groups and was formed in terms of environmental legislation.
  • OREF has an oversight, coordination and consultation role among the various departments of national, provincial, district and local government involved in specialised aspects of estuary management.
  • We have no statutory powers – only the powers of reason and persuasion.
  • Our broad objective is to ensure that the Onrus River estuary remains, for current and future generations, through effective management, a healthy and functioning ecosystem with good water quality suitable for recreational use.
  • The estuary should contribute positively to the local sense of place and the local economy.
  • Effective management is summarised in detail in the approved Environmental Management Plan or EMP.
